The shoes sold on EBAY to raise money for Parkinsons Research.

Above, the concept design art for the shoe in the movie. In the film, the shoe would be like nothing we had seen before and featured 'power laces' as well as various illuminations. The letters MAG on the heel stood for 'Magnetic Anti Gravity' and were supposed to allow the wearer to be able to walk up a wall or even stick to the ceiling. Due to technological limitations of the time, a scene with Marty walking on the ceiling was never shot.

This is the actual product NIKE released for 2011. Whilst it does have the lighting, there are no 'power laces'. The laces are nothing more than elastic. The shoe was designed from scratch to look identical to the shoes in the film, yet even NIKE product personal recognize that its design has inspired many of the shoes NIKE released over the years since it first appeared on screen back in 1989. The 'clean toe' being one in particular. I would also have to say that it was this shoe that propelled the popularity of the Hi-Top in general.

Mark

Our Wedding

On May 14, 2011 Samantha and I became Mr and Mrs Techer. International flights are neat in that you get complementary alcohol with the main meal and a neat in-flight entertainment system loaded with all the latest films (on video) as well games and a decent selection of CDs.

LAX was different. Clearly since 911, security of airports have risen to levels that might be considered over the top and in the end of the day, if you haven’t got anything to hide, then this should not pose a problem. The purpose of our trip was to attend the US CEDIA (Custom Electronic Design Installation Association) and to use this as an opportunity to show off the MK4 lens. Now this lens is packed in a “storm case” which is basically an ABS, padded lockable case for the transportation of fragile equipment. And for some reason, airport X-Ray can’t see through this box, so it immediately causes concern by security personal. I have no problem opening and explaining what it is and once they see it, neither do they. However at LAX, as soon as it went through the X-Ray, a very large security officer called out (or is that shouted) “BRAVO” and everyone was instructed to freeze and step away from the counters and all bags.

I’m going to run with the story that we think this was a call for a possible “bomb threat” given that is small black box could not be seen through by X-Ray. The officer quickly called an “all clear” and thanked us for participating in the “drill”. Interesting to say the least. Of course the usual Lap Top clearance is required, and so are shoes and even the removal of electronic items like a Nintendo DS. Sammy even had to remove her belt.

So we had 4 hours to kill whilst awaiting to board out connecting flight to Atlanta…

After 4 hours, we were able to board the plane. I used this time (now being night time in the US) to sleep so as to adjust to the new time zone. Both Sammy and I arrived at just after 6 in the morning local time. We were on our way to take a shuttle bus when a limo driver said that he would take us to our hotel for $45.00 (cab rates) instead of limo rates. I had no idea how far the hotel was so took the chance that we were going to get a better deal (time wise anyway) than using a shuttle bus. Given the distance, it turned out to be a very good deal. If we had used the shuttle bus, we wouldn’t have arrived at the hotel for over an hour.

The hotel (Ritz-Carlton) is exceptional. To my surprise, the hotel let us into our room at arrival time instead of making us wait for the proper 2PM check in.

Given we had spent the last 30 hours traveling, an early check in and a nice hot shower was much appreciated.

We decided that since we did manage to sleep on the connecting flight, that we wouldn’t sleep that day. It payed off for us and although we were both very tired by that night, we actually got to do stuff in the day. As for ‘jet lag’, I’d say the weirdest part was not knowing what day it was. Monday was a long day. It was good and we used it to test the rail system and visited “The World Of Coca-Cola”.

<img style="display: block;

Atlanta is the home of Coca-Cola and they have a display open that features memorabilia from all around the world, 3D IMAX and a mini plant that allows you see the product being bottled. At the end of the tour is a tasting room where you can experience about 60 different products.

On Tuesday, we decided to go exploring and make sure we knew where to go for CEDIA on Wednesday. We decided to take the CNN tour which whilst not everyone’s cup of tea, I found it quite interesting. We had lunch at a place called “Taco-Mac” and I do wonder why the name, as there was next to no Mexican food there. Affordable and tasty.

My friend Tim (lives in Charlot, about 4 hours drive away) was working in town and took Sammy and I out to dinner. It was good to see him again since his visit in Australia. We went to a place called The Fish Market which has fresh fresh caught daily and specialize in sea food dishes. My 'trout' was really tasty.

Wednesday was another trip into CEDIA so I could attend a course on “THX Baffle Walls”. I am glad that the research I did paid off and I actually got it right. What are the chances that the very first person I speak to (presenter of the course) over here comes from Sydney?

Thursday. CEDIA day one and a chance to meet the guys from AVS. We did what might be best called a “projector crawl” similar to a pub crawl except no beer. I got to meet HT design legend Dennis Erskrine, Scott (GetGray) Horton, and others that frequent the $20K+ section on AVS. I also introduced myself to the guys at THX and got to show off the Aussiemorphic Lens MK4.

Friday. CEDAI day 2 was more of the same and to my surprise, an invite to the THX reception.

<img style="display: block; It was here that I got to meet Laurie Fitcher (THX technical director) and all the guys including guys from Video and R&D that took great interest in the MK4. There was a pre-planned dinner at “Abattoirs” from 7PM, though we didn’t make it to 9PM which worked out really well as most of the others were going to the Digital Projection party at The Hard Rock Café until 9 anyway.

Saturday. CEDIA day 3 and after mid day, we met up with Tim and Artimis and went to visit the Atlanta Aquarium.

<img style="display: block; Impressive to say the least.

<img style="display: block;

Sunday. CEDIA day 4 and the last chance to network. CEDIA finished early and we were planning on going to head to the Museum, but didn’t quite make it.

Monday. Given we had a day to ourselves, we decided to do another tourist thing and go to the Atlanta zoo. The ticket book we purchased said that we could do a train/bus link to the zoo. However when we got to the train station to take the bus, we discovered that the particular bus route had been canceled. just 2 days prior. Worse than that, we found we were in a pretty seedy part of town. There was even what appeared to be dried blood on the stainless steel travellator. We elected to back track back to down town and taxi it out to the zoo.

The zoo was quite impressive. Like Western Plains zoo in Dubbo, there are no 'cages' and the environments are designed to hopefully better replicate the animals native habitat. The best part was the panda exhibit. And to think, even though I went to China last year, this was going to be the place I got to see this amazing animals.

Tuesday. Heading home and we used a taxi to get to the airport. Once there, we were faced with a weight issue and had to remove items from our luggage because we were over 50 pounds. Luckily, the airline allowed 2 hand items as carry on.

Once in LA, we decided to do our duty free shopping and just as well. I don't mind a drop Bacardi Rum, and in Australia, the RRP of a litre bottle is about $45. Duty free in Australia was $28 and in the US, the same was $22USD [at the time, the Aussie dollar was high 90's] and for just 50 cents more, I could get a 1.75L bottle! We were allowed 2.5L each, so we got two 1.75L bottles for just over what a 1L bottle costs here. Gotta love duty free :)

Duty free is sealed in the US which worked out good for us as it allowed us to carry it on instead of having to check in. Customs asked us what we had and had no problem with the fact that we had this plus two open bottles in our checked luggage.

So overall, I highly recommend a trip to Atlanta. I had fun , the locals were friendly and got to experience many new things and hope to visit the US again soon.

Mark

I want a hippopotamus for...

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas.
A hippopotamus is all I want...

And whilst I didn't get a real one for Christmas, I did for my recent 39th birthday when I became a "zoo parent" to a new born Pygmy Hippopotamus! Back then, the hi-top was intended for ankle support when playing sports such as basket ball. They also became popular as street wear. I don't play basket ball, but I do like my hi-tops. This post is being re-done for the purpose of documenting some of the hi-tops I've owned over the years.

NIKE AIR PRESSURE

I did actually buy a pair of these in 1990 [first released in 1989]. They were my 3rd pair of hi tops and the most expensive shoes I'd ever bought. At the time, the price tag was $350, but I got them on sale for $199 where everything with a bladder was being sold for less than $200. They were amazingly comfortable and very well made and I got a good 5 years wear from them in my travels across Australia.

The shoe itself was leather with molded collar which housed the bladder and valve [the lump at the back] where a clear plastic 'pump' could be inserted to inflate the shoe. The idea was that the bladder would make the shoe fit regardless of your foot shape.

The shoes had quite a few things that made them unique including an air sole that was part of the sock liner, not build into the sole. This allowed for the air soles to be replaced should they ever be punctured. Speed lacing was a neat feature that should have been on all shoes using 'flat' laces. A lace is flat, yet the traditional lace hole is round. The laces twist and bind. Not the case here. Slots kept the laces flat and allowed them to pulled through quite fast. The ankle strap could be removed and was end user adjustable.

The shoes came in a clear plastic case with a recess in the lid [which was orange] that allowed the the 'pump' to be stored. The molded collars broke apart and I learned that the material they were made from only had a 5~6 year life span.

AIR JORDAN XX

Not the cleanest I know, but proof I wore these. The Jordan 20 was my first Air Jordan and I must admit, there is something a little special about a pair of Jordan shoes compared to standard NIKE.

The Air Jordan VIII

When the Air Jordan 8 first came out in 1993, I was still wearing my NIKE Air Pressures, so didn't really gravitate to them. back then, they seemed to only come in dark colours and I preferred the lighter option [above] which was released in 2008 as a 'retro'.

The X cross lacing system is neat. I still wear these and because the straps actually secure your foot, I don't bother with the laces. Whilst not as high as the Pressures, they look similar [clean toe] and are comfortable. I actually bought two pair, one for general wearing and one to be kept clean for when I wanted to wear them out.

NIKE AIR MAG 2011

Since NIKE released the NIKE AIR MAG for the film BACK TO THE FUTURE - PART II, sneaker heads from around the globe have been waiting for this shoe to be released. In 2011, NIKE did release a version of the the classic shoe to the US market via EBAY. Proceeds from the sales were then donated to research of Parkinson's disease in a marketing campaign 'back for the future'. Some of the pairs of these shoes auctioned for well into the 5 figures.

FAN MADE

This pair of "NIKE AIR MAG" shoes are made by a fan of the film BTTF2. They are wearable, but were bought as a prop in my home cinema.

NIKE AIR MAG [Custom]

So during the wait, many copies of the classic shoe from BACK TO THE FUTURE - PART II have found their way onto the internet like the NIKE AIR MAG [Custom] which is not authorized my NIKE.

I also did own a pair of REEBOK 'PUMP' shoes once. They didn't have the same appeal as the NIKE Air Pressure, but were more affordable than the NIKE offering, so gained their popularity that way.

Reebok 'THE PUMP'

So just where did this trend start? Whilst I think the film BACK TO THE FUTURE Part II [2 images below] has allot to answer for, a popular brand name high top was also featured in the 1986 film ALIENS.

The idea of a shoe that laces itself up is very cool and is also very 'Jetsons'. Will they actually be able to make such a shoe? Fans have certainly been hopeful and NIKE released a few different shoes to appease the sneaker buff.

The Alternatives

The two images above were tributes to the shoes from the film Back To The Future Part II but never quite hit the mark. HINT: no ankle strap with the blue NIKE!

Mark

My First Visit To South East Asia, And I Survived :)

Like so many things in life, it is not until we take action that we actually complete the tasks we set out to accomplish. Last year I decided that I wanted to visit China. On June 1, 2009 I boarded a plane. My trip covered almost 13 days. I left from Brisbane, flew to Singapore for a few days, then travelled to various cities in China for a few days to then return to Singapore for the remainder of my trip before heading home.

The purpose of this blog is to document this journey and experiences.

June 01:
Depart Brisbane International Airport at 13:55
Arrive Singapore International Airport at 19:50

Today's flight was long. It was pleasant enough, lots to eat and drink. You even get free movies on international flights :) I landed safely and was met at the airport by my guide who dropped me off to my hotel. Singapore is a very pretty city. It is very clean and the people there are friendly and seem to want to help to make visitors feel welcome.

June 02:

A veiw from level 6 of The Skytech Building, Singapore.

The Golf Club

I had a meeting on the 2nd of June with the owners of the company that manufacture parts for my lens. For reasons unkown, I missed it in Brisbane. However, I was fortunate to find this one in one of the major shopping centres. Very entertaining. Later I even had time to go and see Terminator 4 at the cinema before going to dinner at The Hard Rock Cafe.

June 04:

My suit arrived in the morning at the hotel and I was asked to try it on by the tailor to ensure that it fitted.

WOW how cool are tailor made clothes?

June 05:
Depart Singapore International Airport at 0800.
Arrive Shenyang at 16:35 Via Guangzhou.

Going through Customs when one does not speak the native language is interesting to say the least. I was fortunate to meet and English speaking lady on the plane who was kind enough to see me through to Shenyang where I was greeted my English speaking Guide Maggie. Maggie ensured that I was checked in to the hotel room and even arranged for me to use an internet cafe.

June 06:
Maggie met me in the foyer of the hotel at 9am so that we could go and meet with Mr Lu. She did a brilliant job even though some of the technical stuff was beyond her understanding.

After the meeting, Mr Lu, Maggie and my self went out to lunch where we ate local food. Chinese food is awesome in China and I am afraid to say that Chinese food in Australia does not compare.

After lunch, we all headed off to a theme park for the after noon before going to a restaurant for an evening meal.

Maggie and me at the theme park entry
This is the only driving I was prepared to do in China

Driving is China is nothing short of an experience. The intersections were the most interesting. In Austrlia if you have a green arrow to turn right, the on coming traffic has a red light. It seems this is not the case in China. As we turned right, the driver honked the horn as the oncoming traffic proceeded to drive around us. Totally different from anything I have ever seen. Interestingly enough, I saw just 2 "fender benders" in my 5 days there. It seems that there is at least 20 every day in Brisbane.

June 07:

My flight was at 15:30, so I was taken to see a few thing like these Dragons and awesome fountains at a local shopping centre close to Down Town in Shenyang.

These fountains shot water some 5 stories up. Impressive stuff.

Depart Shenyang at 15:30
Arrive Nanjing at 17:30

Like my stay in Shenyang, I was greeted at the Airport by my guide [Lucy] who arranged my transfer and check in at my hotel - the 5 star " Royal Fortune Hotel". I found a local shopping mall and food court where I was able to experience Chinese culture.

The Great Wall Of Nanjing

Nanjing used to be the captial of China and its history dates back to the Ming Dynasty. However, Singapore has a huge Indian population and this sample of Indian food was one of the best I have had.

June 12: Depart Singapore at 21:25
June 13: Arrive Brisbane at 06:50

So in closing, a visit to China is highly recommended.

Likes: The food was amazing, the people I met were kind and the culture is interesting. I think as a 'westerner' I have have learned allot from visiting a country like China.

Dislikes: The smog. Whilst cities like Shenyang have taken on a 'green' approach, it is a little to late to reverse the effects of polution.

Mark

Everyone Should Have Dreams

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Making fresh pasta takes some skill, but once mastered, is simple to make time and time again. When working out portion sizes, the rule of thumb is one egg per person and then as much plain flour [do not use self raising flour] as the mix will take.

How you mix it is up to you. When I was first shown how, I was told to make a hollow into the flour and gradually mix the flour into the beaten eggs. In the end of the day, it really doesn't make or break the recipe, so long as the mix is the right consistency. When the mix is right, the pasta should not stick to anything like the mixing bowl or table. It should be like a dough and should be moist enough not to crumble.

The Pasta Machine

These are not too expensive [shop around] and the good ones are actually made in Italy. This device is both a roller and cutter. The roller portion has several thickness settings and you start at 1 and work through until you reach the desired thickness you want. The sheets on the table behind were taken through at the thinnest setting of 7. At this setting, the pasta is thin enough to see through, but if mixed and needed correctly, is surprisingly tough and will not easily tear.

The cutter on this machine allows two styles of noodle. There are other attachments [sold separately] that allow you to make ravioli and gnocchi. Once you have finished making the pasta, it needs to dry before you can cook it. The best method I have found is to freeze it.

When cooking fresh pasta, you need to have the salted water boiling rapidly. The pasta does not take long, and will be cooked in minutes. Basically, boil the water, add the pasta which will sink, then as the water comes back to the boil, the pasta will float, and that is pretty much done. No 20 minutes of boiling here! Drain well and mix with a fresh pasta sauce. Enjoy!!!

Mark

Back To CAVX Home Page

Got To Love This City

There is something very special about our city at night. font-family: verdana;">Ok this is something different - a cooking lesson - and todays lesson is how I make that perfect pasta sauce.

The Ingrediants

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; I have kept this sauce simple and this sauce is actaully based on Jamie Oliver's Italian special where he chose not to use mince but rather cuts of beef.

I've also used Rosemary for that special flavour.

Yes I know, it is a pack of pasta. In a future post, I will show you how to make fresh pasta from eggs and flower...

Mmm Steak

For this dish, I have actually used steak, nothing expensive, just a cut of BBQ or Round steak. In the past I have even used rib eye!

Jamie's special raised some valid points and asked some serious questions -

1. If pasta sauces have been around well before stainless steel mincing machines, what did they use and
2. What exactly goes into mince anyway?

So starting with browning the onions and beef [with the rosemary] and some good olive oil, I added the about half a glass of the wine as required. This creats steam, sealing the meat and helps to prevent anything from sticking. The rest of the glass goes into the Passata which is simply tomotoes pure'd.

Season as required...

Slow Cooking Is The Secret

After a long slow cooking process, the meat will fall apart. Jamie used a high pressure cooker, but I have simply taken time - about 3 hours to cook this sauce on a low heat...

Cooking With Wine

My Mum's tip for cooking with wine is simple "if it ain't good enough to drink, it ain't good enough to cook with" and I think she has a good point, becuase it will affect the final dish. You will notice that I am using a white wine instead of a red.

Basically one day, I didn't have any red wine in the house, so used a white wine only to find that I actually preffered the flavour. It is interesting that on Jamie's special, he finds what he calls "a mumma" in Italy who also tells him the same thing. If you haven't tried a pasta sauce with white wine, I highly recommend it...

Enjoy!

Mark

Back To CAVX Main Page

New Years Eve

What a way to end 2007
Fantastic company, great food complimented by great wine.

I was invited to join some wonderful people for a dinner party for new years eve and bring in the new year.
